Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP)

Definition - What does Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) mean?

The Certified Professional in Learning and Performance, or CPLP, through ASTD is the premier certification for those individuals working in the corporate training or professional learning field. The certification process consists of two parts, a knowledge exam and a work product. Successful candidates must receive a score of 60% or better to pass the knowledge exam and 8 (out of 12) or better to pass the work product.

The CPLP knowledge exam is a 150 question multiple-choice, 2½-hour test that focuses on nine areas of workplace learning and performance. This exam can be taken at a variety of testing centers throughout the US and is offered four times each year during designated testing windows. Candidates will have their knowledge tested in the following categories:
  • Designing Learning - 15%
  • Delivering Training - 15%
  • Improving Human Performance - 15%
  • Measuring and Evaluating - 12%
  • Facilitating Organizational Change - 12%
  • Managing the Learning Function - 9%
  • Coaching - 8%
  • Managing Organizational Knowledge - 8%
  • Career Planning and Talent Management - 6%
The work product portion of this certification must be a real world example created by the candidate for a work related situation. Candidates have the option of choosing between 6 individual areas of expertise, or AOEs, on which they want to complete their work product. Work products must be assembled in a specific format and candidates should carefully read the candidate bulletin before choosing, assembling or mailing their work product.

Potential candidates should realize that the certification process for the CPLP is very involved and not to be taken lightly. The knowledge exam is situation based and a large percentage of the questions ask for actions or responses based on a given scenario.

Also, candidates should be aware that there are significant costs associated with attempting a CPLP certification. Signing up for the testing process costs $999.00 for non-ASTD members and $799.00 for members. This does not include any study materials or the cost of ASTD membership.
