Definition - What does Series 6 Exam mean?

Series 6 exam is taken by individuals who wish to sell mutual funds to their clients. Once a person passes the series 6 exam they may also sell variable annuity contracts to their clients if they have passed the Life insurance exam in their state. The series 6 exam is administered by FINRA. It is 100 questions long and must be completed in two hours and 15 minutes. In order to pass the series 6 exam a score of 70% or higher is required.

Passing the series 6 exam qualifies an agent an investment company representative. The series 6 exam is taken by insurance agents, retail bankers, and other professionals who want to add additional products and services to their practice. The are no pre requites to taking the series 6 exam. However, a person must be sponsored by a FINRA member firm to take the series 6 exam.
